Hi there, happy December! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!
After taking some time away from the world of productivity and such, I couldn't help but try to start something new to channel my energy for self-improvement into something that can help people.
With that said, I would like to present The Human Optimization Project (HOP). What does this mean for you?
  • Free monthly newsletter here on Substack - no more, no less.
  • The focus is on productivity, fitness, ethics, and a bit more.
  • No software, no costs - just free articles, videos, and resources.
With that intro, let me highlight a few key themes and give you a flavor of what I plan to share each month. These notes will be posted to Substack, while the full library of HOP resources will be available on the HOP Website, so check that out!

One Big Thing:

I've always been a fan, at least as an adult, of reviewing my year and making some kind of plan for the next one. I find that it helps me evaluate gains I've made, find my gaps, and identify what I really want to accomplish.
This year, I've turned my latest setup into a slick Notion template that guides you through the process. If you are looking to plan out your coming year, or even if you are a bit skeptical, it'd be great if you could give it a try!
Here's the main view of the template, to give you an idea!

The template is available for free here.
And you can read more about it here.

Three Themes:

🪙
Cryptocurrencies are the future of money... and the internet. This isn't something that can be grasped overnight, but it is a critical paradigm shift that is starting to occur. While critics continue to pooh pooh it, the market stands at close to $3 Trillion - so it may be worth figuring out what all the fuss is about! Start with seeing 🎚️Bitcoin Explained at 5 Levels - Crypto #2 and then consider diving into Coinbase directly and buying some! And, be sure to sign up for a Bitcoin Rewards Credit Card since 💳Bitcoin Reward Cards are the Best Cards!
📚
If you want to have educated children... you'll have to do most of it yourself. While we've watched 📈Education Spending Go Zoom, we've also seen 🤮Education Outcomes Go Bleh. This was true before our Covid response made matters even worse! The education system is sorely in need of an overhaul, which is why homeschooling numbers have skyrocketed to 12% nationally. Even if you can't make that commitment, be sure to supplement your child's education. Our first lesson, What is Math 24? is out, but also check out our 📚Education page for more resources!

Curbing your vices is hard, but essential to living a better life. As someone with a somewhat addictive personality, I know this better than most. Check out how I was 📱Combatting Smartphone Addiction, how I managed my alcohol intake 🍺The Vice Cycle: An Alcohol Example, or how I recently (Not Quite) Quitting Coffee. The thing I need to do better on next? Reducing my time on Twitter!

Challenge for the Month:

Each month, this letter will give you a challenge. It's completely up to you if you want to do it, obviously, but the goal is to give you some starting motivation or push to achieve something.
For this month, we'll keep it general: pick out one thing that you want to get done in the next month, and write it down now and then complete it in December. Next month, this letter will include a reminder to check in on that and see if you actually got it done!

Closing Thoughts:

I hope that this e-mail helped you learn something new, provided a new perspective, or motivated you in some way. That is and will be the goal each month. As I note on the HOP Homepage, there are a lot of forces out there that pull us away from being productive and accomplishing our goals. I hope you'll see this newsletter as a monthly oasis to re-center and focus on the things that truly matter to you.
One last thing: my inbox is open, so please feel free to write back to me with any thoughts, things you'd like to hear more about, et cetera. It would be great to hear from you, and I will reply!
Best,
Ben Mumma
